Cool Whip Easter Eggs

Easter is less than a week away and if you haven’t decided how to dye your eggs yet, today is the day. Dying eggs with whipped cream is a super easy, food-safe way to dye eggs. And as a mom of two three year old boys, I’m pretty excited to do this method with them. Dropping eggs in cups full of liquid is not only messy, but leads to easily cracked eggs. The whipped cream method is a little more forgiving (though not necessarily less messy with toddlers).

Plus, I LOVE the look this method gives the eggs. It’s such a fun way to mix colors that ends up looking kind of tie dye. And no two eggs look the same – ever. The hardest part of making them is waiting the 5 minutes for the eggs to sit before you can clean them off and see how they turned out.

So let’s grab our ingredients and get started on these Cool Whip Easter Eggs!

Ingredients including cool whip, 6 eggs, bowl of vinegar and gel colors

Ingredients

  • Hard Boiled Eggs – You should have enough Cool Whip to dye a dozen eggs.
  • Vinegar – I used white vinegar.
  • Whipped Cream – I used Cool Whip, but other brands of whipped cream would work, as well as making Homemade Whipped Cream.
  • Gel Icing Colors – I used AmeriColor and find squeeze bottles to be easiest to use, but other brands would work as well.

How to Dye Cool Whip Easter Eggs

If just a few simple steps, you’ll be on your way to some beautiful Easter eggs.

  1. Soak in Vinegar – Place the eggs in a bowl and pour the vinegar over them. Let them sit for 5 minutes, then take them out and dry them. Set aside.
  2. Ready the Whipped Cream – Spread the whipped cream into an even layer, about an inch thick, on a plate or cookie sheet.
  3. Add Coloring – Add drops of food coloring over the whipped cream, then swirl with a toothpick or knife.
  4. Color Eggs – Roll the eggs in the whipped cream, then set them on a plate to sit for about 5 minutes to let the color soak onto the egg shell.
  5. Clean Off Eggs – Wipe eggs clean with a paper towel or rinse under water, then store in the refrigerator.

Would shaving cream work instead of whipped cream? Don’t want to waste whipped cream, especially since we dye so many eggs. I love this idea!

I’m probably a little late in responding, but shaving cream does work. I’m just not sure if the eggs are edible afterwards.
