This Malted Easter Egg Chocolate Cheesecake is thick, creamy, full of chocolate and perfect for Easter! It’s also decorated with my favorite Easter candy – malted eggs!
Easter is one of my favorite holidays, right alongside Christmas. Not only do I love the reason for the holiday and celebrating Christ’s resurrection, I also love that it’s usually spent with family. Not to mention the fun the celebration around it. Who doesn’t love a furry Easter bunny and egg hunts?
Well this year I have another thing to love. This Easter will be the first for our twin boys. I’ve always looked forward to celebrating holidays with kids and finally we get to do that this year. I’m already trying to pick out what adorable onesie they will wear. 🙂
And while I can’t quite share dessert with them yet, I have no doubt I will share my favorite desserts and candies with them one day. At Easter one of my favorite candies is malted eggs. I could eat an entire package in one sitting and not even blink an eye. So naturally I decided to include them in a cheesecake.
To get started with the cheesecake, you’ll make the crust. I used Oreos but feel free to use your preferred kind of crust.
The cheesecake filling is fairly straightforward. Mix everything together, but be sure not to mix it at a high speed. High speeds add more air to the batter, which can cause air bubbles to rise and create cracks. The final step for the cheesecake filling is to add the malted eggs. The malted eggs don’t necessarily provide a ton of additional flavor to the already chocolate cheesecake, but they add a little bit of crunchy texture and they are super festive!
The cheesecake is then baked in a water bath. I like the use of a waterbath to help prevent cracks, keep the cheesecake moist and to keep the cheesecake from browning while baking. While you could bake the cheesecake without it, for a nicer looking cheesecake you’ll want to use it. Here’s a little tutorial on how to prevent your cheesecake water bath from leaking.
The final cheesecake is then topped with chocolate whipped cream and a bunch of chopped and crushed malted eggs. Such a smooth and creamy cheesecake that’s colorful and festive! Perfect for celebrating this Easter!

Description
This Malted Easter Egg Chocolate Cheesecake is thick, creamy, full of chocolate and perfect for Easter!
Ingredients
CRUST
- 2 1/4 cups (302g) oreo cookie crumbs
- 4 tbsp (g) salted butter, melted
CHOCOLATE CHEESECAKE
- 24 oz (678g) cream cheese, room temperature
- 1 cup (207g) sugar
- 3/4 cup (85g) natural unsweetened cocoa
- 1 cup (230g) sour cream
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 4 eggs, room temperature
- 1 cup chopped malted easter eggs
TOPPING
- 3/4 cup (240ml) heavy whipping cream, cold
- 1/4 cup (29g) powdered sugar
- 2 tbsp (14g) natural unsweetened cocoa
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- Additional chopped malted easter eggs
Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 325°F (163°C). Line a 9-inch (23cm) springform pan with parchment paper in the bottom and grease the sides.
2. Combine the crust ingredients in a small bowl. Press the mixture into the bottom and up the sides of the springform pan.
3. Bake the crust for 10 minutes, then set aside to cool.
4. Cover the outsides of the pan with aluminum foil so that water from the water bath cannot get in (see how I prepare my pan for a water bath). Set prepared pan aside.
CHEESECAKE
1. Reduce oven temperature to 300°F (148°C).
2. In a large bowl, beat the cream cheese, sugar and cocoa on low speed until well completely combined and smooth. Be sure to use low speed to reduce the amount of air added to the batter, which can cause cracks. Scrape down the sides of the bowl.
3. Add the sour cream and vanilla extract and mix on low speed until well combined.
4. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing slowly to combine after each addition. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed to make sure everything is well combined.
5. Add the chopped malted eggs and gently stir into the batter.
6. Pour the cheesecake batter evenly into the crust.
7. Place the springform pan inside another larger pan. Fill the outside pan with enough warm water to go about halfway up the sides of the springform pan. The water should not go above the top edge of the aluminum foil on the springform pan.
8. Bake for 1 hour 5 minutes. The center should be set, but still jiggly.
9. Turn off the oven and leave the door closed for 30 minutes. The cheesecake will continue to cook, but slowly begin to cool as well.
10. Crack the door of the oven for 30 minutes to allow the cheesecake to continue to cool slowly. This process helps prevent cracking.
11. Remove the cheesecake from the oven and water bath wrapping and refrigerate until firm, 5-6 hours or overnight.
12. When the cheesecake is cool and firm, remove from the springform pan and set on a serving plate.
13. To make the chocolate whipped cream, add the heavy whipping cream, powdered sugar, cocoa and vanilla extract to a large mixer bowl. Whip on high speed until stiff peaks form.
14. Spread the whipped cream on top of the cheesecake.
15. Add additional chopped malted eggs on top. Refrigerate until ready to serve. Cheesecake is best for 3-4 days.

Enjoy!
My cousin chooses a different cheesecake every year for his birthday (we’ve been keeping this traditional for over 15 years) and have been using your cheesecakes for the last few. Can we use malted milk balls interchangeably instead of Easter eggs? Thanks!
I’m so glad to hear you’ve enjoyed the cheesecakes! And yes, malted milk balls should be fine.
Do you think this cheesecake would still taste good without the cocoa? I really want to try this but prefer the taste of a vanilla cheesecake.
You could leave out the cocoa, but replace it with 3 tbsp of flour and add a little more vanilla extract. You could also check out my vanilla cheesecake for more guidance.
My husband said this cheesecake was “unbelievable”! He’s never said that about anything I’ve cooked for him in the entire 10 years we’ve been together. Thank you! This will become a staple desert in our house!!
